Anybody around me can't help but have heard about my latest obsession. One of my dear friends at work gave me this website.
www.heifer.org
You basically donate money in the form of an animal. On the website you choose which animal you want to donate (the monetary amount of your donation differs depending on the animal). They then will give the animal to a person in need. The person then uses the animal to provide food (milk from a cow, eggs from a chicken) and income (sell wool of a sheep or use a buffalo to plow ground) for their family. You can give $20 and give chickens, $1500 for an entire "ark" of animals (two of a kind!), and a whole bunch of money for a water buffalo!!!
I love the idea of giving an animal away. You can also give the animal in someone elses' name and they get a certificate.
Nate and I decided to buy a sheep for our Christmas present to each other. I'm really excited about it for some reason. Granted I get excited about stuff like this on a normal basis, but it's kinda fun getting caught up in that giving fervor around the Holidays -- or anytime for that manner.
I've also gone a kick about joining the Peace Corps. I think this is where my Mom will sigh and say something like "She inherited all of these ideas from the Fehrs! What's wrong with staying in Tremont?!". Poor Grandma Beutel, getting blamed for all of my eccentricities. : )
