Hey, I just returned to the lovely state of Virginia from yet another lovely place..... Detroit, Michigan! Okay, so the only place I was at in Detroit was the Northwest Airlines hangar, but it was a Mecca for someone like me.
This place was decked out. They had so many shops that it could nearly have been called a mall. Not to mention the dozens of specialty food shops, just crying out for the bored masses to buy their greasy food. But the best part of all was the metro system inside the hangar. I kid you not, they had a metro to get from one end of the hangar to the next. They had North, South, and a "middle" station. I made Nate ride it with me and it was quite blissful. For all of those lazy and/or rushed Americans, you can simply ride an escalator up and jump into a lovely little metro to take you from point A to point B (probably a mile apart?). I got a kick out of it, but still thought it was kinda funny that we need a metro to move us a relatively short distance. Is it really necessary? More of taxpayers dollars hard at work I guess. Because I'm certain NWA didn't make the money to pay for it. Which airlines make money these days?
But I am happy. I came out of this flight with a packet of pretzels and a can of Pepsi. I am no worse for the flight, and you might even say that I am better due to my short experience in Mo-town. I now know what a truly great airport can be like. If I ever decide to leave accounting, perhaps I can go into airport hangar design. There's got to be some way to get a Banana Republic inside of O'Hare : )
