Last night we went to see three different apartments. I really liked one of them, a little place (70m) on a corner right in the area where we'd like to live. The building isn't old and stately, but the inside is bright and sunny. The layout is unique, must more open than the majority of apartments we've seen so far. Downsides? Oh yes, there is no dishwasher (sniff) and no balcony. We did ask the owner if we could put in a dishwasher and he said yes... but... we would have to do it ourselves. Hopefully we could handle plumbing? Oh, and in more fun news (you may notice a theme in my blogs), there is a restaurant directly below the building that was cooking up something that smelled incredible while we were touring the place.
There is one more apartment that we'd like to check out tomorrow. But I'm pretty much ready to just pick one. We lived in an ant-infested little home in DC, so I think we can live in a smaller, prettier place in Germany.
Interesting Fact: In the state we live in (Baden-Wurtemburg), there is this strange little custom that the people living in an apartment have to take care of the "communal" areas together. For example, you may be responsible to clean off your steps every week and then once every few weeks you have to sweep the front sidewalks (or shovel snow off daily) and clean other areas. It really depends on which building you live in.
Another plus for the apartment I was describing before is that there is a cleaner that comes in to take care of these chores. So, Nate and I wouldn't have to clean! Whoo hoo!!
