I am Trying

Well, I have tried for many, many days to write a new blog entry. I kept thinking that I was going to take a picture of this or that and then blog about it, but never got around to taking the pictures. In truth, I suppose life has become a bit s-l-o-w, so there really hasn't been much to talk about.

That said...

1. Baking Adventures

I made these delicious cheese muffins last week. I didn't take any pictures, but if you click on the link, you will be taken to a website that chronicles the making of the muffins entirely in pictures. The only thing I did differently from the recipe was use cheddar instead of colby-jack cheese. Colby-jack cheese hasn't yet been invented here in Deutschland. My only comment about these muffins is that they are ten times better on the first day, right out of the oven. When you take a bite the cheese literally strings from your mouth to the muffin. That alone was enough to make me swoon with pleasure. However, the next day there was no stringy cheese, and consequently, not nearly as much pleasure. Perhaps if I had a microwave to reheat the muffins, I could have recaptured the magic?

Fig’s Cheese Muffins

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups shredded colby-jack cheese
1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter (I used salted)

Whisk together dry ingredients, then stir in cheese.

In a separate bowl, whisk egg, milk, and butter together. Pour milk mixture into dry ingredients and stir with a spoon to combine.

Bake in greased muffin tins at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Makes 12. [I served these muffins with chili. They went quite well together.]

2. Decorating!

I had completely forgotten that my Mother in law had given us pillow shams to go with the duvet cover she had gifted us last year. I probably forgot about them because I had no idea what they were. Maybe I figured that anything with the word 'sham' in it had to be a bit shady. Anyhow, when Mem called and asked if the shams were the correct size for our pillows I had to mutter and admit that I had no idea what she was talking about.

Thankfully, my domestically inclined husband knew exactly what she meant and produced the shams. So now I am a big girl, I am a motherly domestic type... I have two pillows with shams on my bed. And I must admit that it looks rather nice. Nothing shady about it.

3. 38 Weeks

Nate has Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving. Yesterday I remarked to him how nice it would be to take a trip, like fly to someplace warm (like the Grand Canaries) for the four day weekend. He said that no European airline would fly a 38 week pregnant woman. I shot back that at least 4 people have asked me in the last week if I was due in February, so I'm sure that the airlines would be none the wiser.

He agreed. But we're still staying here. Sniff.

I think on that topic, Nate was correct. Sticking close to home would be best. You could try wrapping the muffins in foil and put them in the oven to warm them. Love, Mom
